Monolithic kitchen islands in Inca

There is a kind of island that does not look like a worktop resting on cupboards: it looks like a block. That is exactly what the photograph shows — a large white piece whose sides drop to the floor at a right angle to the top, with no edge detail or moulding interrupting them. It is achieved by mitring the panels and thermally bonding the joint, then sanding it until it disappears. The result reads as a solid volume carved from one piece. This is workshop work rather than assembly, and it is probably where the difference between Solid Surface and any other material is most obvious.

How a monolithic block is built

Mitred joints between the top and the sides, bonded and sanded until invisible.
Side panels reaching the floor, with no recessed plinth and no visible legs.
An integrated sink in the same plane, with no change of material or tone.
An internal supporting structure, essential so a volume like this does not flex.
The back face finished like the front, because it is seen from the living room.

A block of these dimensions cannot be moved assembled. The panels are made in the workshop, delivered separately and put together in the house. All the bonding happens on site, which is why the result does not depend on the width of your door or stairwell.

When the kitchen opens onto the living room, the island stops being kitchen furniture and becomes the main piece in the room. It is worth treating it as such: no appliances on the living-room face, sockets integrated, and a height that works for leaning as well as for cooking.
