Does it need sealing periodically like marble?

No. Being non-porous it needs no periodic treatment at all — ordinary cleaning is enough.

Can I cut directly on it?

Better to use a board. A knife will scratch it, though unlike other materials that scratch can be polished out.

Stone-effect kitchen worktops in Marratxí

A lot of people want the look of stone without its drawbacks. The kitchen in the photograph is a good example of that middle path: worktop and island in a dark grey with the veining and grain of stone, over timber units. Visually it passes for granite. Functionally it does not behave like it. Granite and marble are porous, absorb oil and wine unless they are sealed periodically, and arrive as slabs that force a visible joint once the run passes a certain length. Here there are no pores to seal and no joint to disguise, and a stain or a scratch can be dealt with without replacing the piece.

Stone appearance, Solid Surface behaviour

Finishes with veining and particle that read as granite, marble or limestone.
Long runs that look like one piece, without the joint a stone slab imposes.
A non-porous surface: it does not absorb oil, wine or dyes, and never needs sealing.
Solid edges with the same appearance, with no edge banding to lift.
Knocks and scratches repaired by sanding, which is impossible in natural stone.

The honest comparison is this: natural stone stands up better to direct heat and to cutting, while Solid Surface stands up better to staining, to joints and to time. If pans come off the hob straight onto the surface, stone takes more. If hygiene and maintenance are what concern you, this material wins clearly.

Many Marratxí kitchens are in relatively recent homes, with units still in good condition and laminate worktops that have aged badly at the edges. Replacing only the surface is a clean job: the old one comes out, we measure over the existing units, and the new one goes in without touching doors or drawers.
