The whole thing rests on one simple idea — the less it touches the floor and the fewer joints it has, the easier it is to clean and the larger the room feels. The piece is made in one go with the bowl already formed inside, so there is no metal rim, no silicone bead and none of the usual step between basin and top where water always ends up sitting.

Most of the bathroom work we do is not a full refit. The basin and top are replaced while the tiling and sanitaryware stay, which takes a day or two and produces almost no rubble. It is the change that alters the look of a bathroom most for the least disruption.

If the bathroom is heavily used — a house with children, or a rental — the shower lining is worth considering too. Tile grout is the first thing to degrade there, and replacing it with a continuous surface removes the problem rather than postponing it.
